Health Offices

Welcome to the McKinley Middle School Health Offices

We are here to help students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. Whether a student needs a quiet place to rest, has a health question, or simply needs an adult to talk with, the health office is a caring place to start.

The nurse and health office staff work together with students, families, teachers, counselors, and other school staff to care for the whole child. We value each student's dignity, privacy, culture, and individual needs.

For families:

Please reach out whenever you have a school health question or concern. We want communication with families to feel welcoming, respectful, and easy.

For students:

You do not have to figure out a health concern by yourself. Asking for help is a strong choice, and the health office is here to listen and support you.

How We Can Support Students

Our health office is a place for practical help, compassionate care, and partnership with families and school staff.

  • Ongoing support and management for chronic health conditions.
  • Answers to health questions and supportive communication with families.
  • Immunization review.
  • Health plans needed for school programming, including IEP-related needs.
  • A safe, calm, and comforting place for students to rest when appropriate.
  • Storage of prescription and over-the-counter medications when the required paperwork is completed.

Medication storage and administration are subject to applicable school, district, and state requirements and require authorization paperwork.

When Your Child Needs a Rest Day at Home

We know it can be hard to decide whether a child is well enough for school. When a student is too sick to participate comfortably, staying home gives them time to recover and helps protect classmates and staff.

When in doubt, families are welcome to contact the health office for guidance about school participation.

Common Reasons to Keep a Child Home

  • Fever: A temperature above 100.4°F (38°C). A child may return after being fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication and when they feel well or are improving.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea: Three or more episodes in six hours, with or without fever. A child may return after 24 or more hours since the last episode and when symptoms are improving.
  • Respiratory illness: Cough, runny nose, or other severe cold symptoms that interfere with school participation.
  • Symptoms that prevent participation: Fatigue, extreme tiredness, persistent cough or sneezing, headache, body aches, earache, chills, or severe sore throat.
  • Unknown or undiagnosed rash or other untreated skin conditions.
  • Eye irritation: Drainage, crusting, pain, or redness may be a sign of infection and may need evaluation by a healthcare provider.
  • Antibiotic treatment: If a provider has evaluated the illness and started antibiotic treatment, the child should remain home for the first full 24 hours of medication.
